About the work
Jacolby Satterwhite creates immersive worlds in which personal memories, popular culture and art history converge. Working across digital animation, video, installation, performance, sculpture and virtual reality, he explores identity, labour, consumption, the body, technology and queer culture.
Using a range of software, Satterwhite develops intricate digital animations and live-action videos populated by avatars of himself, his friends and fellow artists. These environments become stages on which drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, writing and performance come together.
His visual language draws on queer theory, modernism, video games and popular culture. Both personal and political, his work questions established conventions within Western art history. A central source of inspiration is his late mother, Patricia Satterwhite. Her ethereal singing voice and imaginative designs for visionary household devices recur throughout his work, shaping a universe where memory, mythology and speculative futures intertwine.
In Doubt, Satterwhite evokes an idyllic, almost pastoral scene while bringing together references to Caravaggioโs The Incredulity of Saint Thomas and Bruce Naumanโs iconic neon figures. Yet his figures belong unmistakably to the present. They wear close-fitting durags bearing words drawn from his motherโs fantastical narratives.
The work featured in Satterwhiteโs breakthrough exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York, which The New York Times selected as one of the defining art moments of 2020. The exhibitionโs expansive science-fiction pastoral included a monumental video projection inhabited by sensual, androgynous avatars, hybrid creatures and human figures. Some performed Satterwhiteโs angular choreography or destroyed meteorites resembling disco balls; others simply asserted their presence with confidence.
Within this imaginative world, Doubt connects an art historical gesture of uncertainty with contemporary questions of identity, embodiment and belonging.
