About the work

In her work, Sosnowska uses space itself as an artistic medium. She develops each project for a specific site, often intervening in the existing architecture. In doing so, she transforms physical space into psychological space, playing with the viewer’s perception. As she puts it: β€œI am particularly interested in the moments when architectural space begins to take on the characteristics of a mental space.”

Sosnowska is regarded as one of the leading sculptors of her generation. Initially, she explored the relationship between two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional space. She eventually abandoned the canvas altogether, turning space itself into a kind of three-dimensional painting.

Monika Sosnowska

Β° 1990 in Brooklyn. Thornton lives and works in New York. The artist, who identifies as non-binary, works across painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Their practice examines social structures, norms, power relations and the mechanisms through which personal and professional identities are constructed.

Thornton’s work explores the fluidity of identity and the possibility of multiple interpretations. Resisting fixed labels and the idea that an artwork should convey a single message, they deliberately leave ideas open and unresolved. In their exhibitions, works are often arranged so that the surrounding architecture and the visitor’s position become part of the meaning.

In 2023, Thornton presented a major solo exhibition at the Vienna Secession.
